Sanding a hardwood floor

Sanding a hardwood floor is relatively easy as long as you have the correct tools. You are going to want to use a power sander to do the trick - they're called drum sanders. What you'll be looking for when sanding the floor are scratches, along with gaps which don't match up.

When you're sanding the floor you need to go from right to left. You'll also want to sand the floor at a 45 degree angle. Each time you go from right to left you're going to advance about 2 inches, then come back. Again, 2 inches, then come back. Repeat this process several times. After you go over the entire floor, if you still have scratches or high spots, do it again.

The general approach you are looking for here is going from right to left across the length or width of the room, then eventually turn back around and sand the missed sections, from right to left, back to where you began.

One thing to mention is while you are sanding, there's a high possiblity the sanding paper can be ripped. So make sure you have extra sandpaper on hand just in case.

Now, when you're done, you may notice a small line close to the wall where the sanding machine failed. If this is the case you're going to need an edge sander. It gets into the little crevices near the wall that the drum sander may have missed.
